Bell & Howell Document Scanners Bell & Howell , a US based company, has been around for almost 100 years. The company merged with Böwe Systec, AG, (a German company specializing in cutting and insertion equipment for the document industry) and is now called Böwe Bell & Howell (BB&H). The Copiscan 8000 Series scanners have competitive speeds for their value but B&H stresses that scanning speed alone is only part of the productivity equation – reliability and tolerance of originals being equally important. Bell & Howell added VRS (virtual rescan technology). VRS, which relies on software and a controller board from Kofax, lets operators correct skewed scans and poor exposures without re-feeding the documents. In many ways the Spectrum models are quite similar to the Copiscan scanners that they replace. The document feeder holds up to 500 sheets, including ledger size, and up to 40” long. Connectivity is thru a SCSI-3 board for a PC and a SCSI cable with the scanner. They are heavy duty scanners with a daily cycle of 60,000 pages. The rollers are guaranteed for 600,000 scans.
Böwe Bell + Howell recently added ‘auto color detect’ — a feature that automatically senses color documents and scans them in color, even when mixed with black-and-white documents — to its Copiscan 8000 Spectrum Series. With auto color detect, Spectrum can produce image outputs that are either color or bitonal depending on the content of each page, and based on a threshold the user selects. No separator sheets or toggle patches are needed.
